NCAAF 2018 Ranking after Conference Championships

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: Week 14, 2 DEC 2018
(Delta Calc'd from Week 13, 26 NOV 2018)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Notes:
  • The top 5 teams remain unchanged after the conference championships: Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State.
  • #5 Ohio State defeated #24 Northwestern in the Big Ten championship, but it was not enough (as I mentioned last week) to pass Georgia, even with the Bulldogs losing to #1 Alabama. This was largely due to the massive lead that the top 4 teams had over the field.
  • Oklahoma passes Michigan for the #6 spot.
  • Notre Dame holds on to the #2 spot by a very slim margin, despite not playing and #3 Clemson defeating #30 Pittsburgh
  • Top 10 // Top 25  Teams for each conference:
    • ACC: 1 // 2
    • Big Ten: 2 // 4
    • Big 12: 1 // 2
    • Pac 12: 0 // 4
    • SEC: 4 // 9
My prediction for the final CFP ranking:
  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Notre Dame
  5. Ohio State
  6. Georgia
I believe the committee will rank Oklahoma above ND in the final rankings. A win over Texas in the Big 12 championship game will get them in the top 4. From there, I believe the committee will place OU above ND because they have played and defeated an extra ranked team to win a conference championship.

If OU passes ND, would it be possible for OSU to pass ND as well? It's possible, but unlikely. I actually see this as the more likely of the scenarios for OSU to make the playoffs (passing ND rather than OU). However, I do not believe this will happen. I believe OU will pass ND but not OSU because of that terrible loss to Purdue that the Buckeyes have.

Should Notre Dame get in the playoffs even though they didn't play a conference championship game? Despite what your opinions are on this question, this is not a reason that the committee will use against ND. Again, I don't believe Ohio State will pass Notre Dame... but if, on the completely off chance that both OU and OSU do pass ND, leaving the Irish out of the playoffs, it will be because of the positives for those teams, not as a punishment against ND. Keep in mind, the past two seasons have seen teams that didn't even play in their conference championships make the playoffs (2016 Ohio State, 2017 Alabama). And both of those teams had a loss, which ND does not have.

NCAAF 2018 Rankings after Week 13

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: Week 13, 26 NOV 2018
(Delta Calc'd from Week 12, 19 NOV 2018)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Notes:
  • Ohio State jumps 6 spots to #5 after devastating #6 michigan.
  • Oklahoma moves up to #7 after defeating #25 West Virginia. (OU will jump #6 michigan with a win over #19 Texas in the Big 12 championship).
  • Notice that #4 Georgia has a significant rating margin over Ohio State and OU. It will be interesting to see if Georgia loses, OSU wins, and/or OU wins, whether either of those teams will have a high enough rating to pass Georgia.
  • ND remains at #2 after squeaking by #71 USC. ND has a high enough rating that it is fairly safe to say they will retain a top 4 spot in my rankings despite not playing in a championship game. This is largely due to ND running the table with a very high strength of schedule (#17)
  • Clemson jumps Georgia to get to the #3 spot after defeating #20 South Carolina.
  • SEC dominance. The SEC continues to hold 5 of the top 10 spots... And 9 of the top 25. It looks like the SEC is actually earning their hype this year... So far, anyway... Also, take a look at my conference ratings below. The SEC has pulled away from the other conferences by a larger margin than I've seen since tracking the conferences.
  • Conference championship week! Here are the Power Five conference championship matchups:
    • #23 Northwestern vs #5 The Ohio State University
    • #4 Georgia vs #1 Alabama
    • #21 Utah vs #18 Washington
    • #19 Texas vs #7 Oklahoma
    • #28 Pittsburgh vs #3 Clemson
  • Top 10 // Top 25  Teams for each conference:
    • ACC: 1 // 2
    • Big Ten: 2 // 4
    • Big 12: 1 // 3
    • Pac 12: 0 // 3
    • SEC: 5 // 9

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: Week 12, 19 NOV 2018
(Delta Calc'd from Week 11, 12 NOV 2018)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Notes:
  • Alabama's lead at the #1 shrinks substantially after winning its bye week (I mean... the game against The Citadel) and #2 Notre Dame defeating #23 Syracuse.
  • ND's win over Syracuse is its 4th best win this season, according to my rankings.
  • #3 Georgia and #4 Clemson make up the rest of the Top 4.
  • Ohio State falls 2 spots to #11 after an unimpressive win against #66 Maryland.
  • UCF climbs 4 spots to #8 after defeating #30 Cincinnati.
  • Oklahoma also dropped after an unimpressive win. They are now ranked #10.
  • SEC dominance. The SEC continues to hold 5 of the top 10 spots... And 10 of the top 25. It looks like the SEC is actually earning their hype this year... So far, anyway... Also, take a look at my conference ratings below. The SEC has pulled away from the other conferences by a larger margin than I've seen since tracking the conferences.
  • It's the best week of the year in college football: Rivalry Week! Here are the rivalry matchups of every team in my Top 10 (note, not one Top 10 matchup this year):
    • #24 Auburn v #1 Alabama
    • #2 Notre Dame v #65 USC
    • #47 Georgia Tech v #3 Georgia
    • #17 South Carolina v #4 Clemson
    • #5 michigan v #11 The Ohio State University
    • #6 LSU v #15 Texas A&M
    • #7 Florida v #55 Florida St
    • #8 UCF v #93 South Florida
    • #9 Kentucky v #116 Louisville
    • #10 Oklahoma v #21 West Virginia
  • Top 10 // Top 25  Teams for each conference:
    • ACC: 1 // 3
    • Big Ten: 1 // 4
    • Big 12: 1 // 3

NCAAF 2018 Rankings after Week 11

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: Week 11, 12 NOV 2018
(Delta Calc'd from Week 10, 5 NOV 2018)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Notes:
  • Alabama's lead at the #1 spot increases after defeating #15 Miss St
  • ND, Georgia, Clemson, and michigan round out the Top 5.
  • Ohio State jumps 6 spots to #9 after defeating #18 Michigan St.
  • UCF is at #12 despite being undefeated. This year, their opponents have not been as impressive as last year, which earns them less gains in the ratings after each win. They are ranked #11 in both the AP and Coaches polls.
  • My ratings are (unfortunately) favoring SEC teams more than the human polls for the first time... ever. Usually, according to my rankings, the SEC teams are always overrated. The opposite is true this year. Compared to the human polls, I have Kentucky and Miss St 10 spots higher, and Florida 7 spots higher. Speaking of the SEC...
  • SEC dominance. The SEC holds 5 of the top 10 spots... And 9 of the top 25. It looks like the SEC is actually earning their hype this year... So far, anyway... Also, take a look at my conference ratings below. The SEC has pulled away from the other conferences by a larger margin than I've seen since tracking the conferences.

NCCAF 2018 Rankings after Week 10

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: Week 10, 5 NOV 2018
(Delta Calc'd from Week 9, 29 OCT 2018)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Notes:
  • Alabama's big win over LSU vaulted themselves to #1 in my ratings. LSU drops 4 spots to #6 after the loss.
  • Georgia takes the #2 spot after defeating #7 Kentucky
  • Kentucky is #7? What in the world in college football is going on? Kentucky is ranked #12 in the AP and coaches poll. My ratings are giving them more credit than the human polls (possibly because of stigma?). The Wildcats have the 7th best Strength of Record and 15th toughest schedule, according to my ratings.
  • A couple of teams are now climbing in my rating after the past couple of weeks. #10 West Virginia and #12 UCF both had solid gains after winning in Week 10. The AP/Coaches have them at 7th/8th (WVU), and 11th/11th (UCF).
  • SEC dominance. The SEC holds 5 of the top 10 spots... And 10 of the top 25. It looks like the SEC is actually earning their hype this year... So far, anyway... Also, take a look at my conference ratings below. The SEC has pulled away from the other conferences by a larger margin than I've seen since tracking the conferences.

NCAAF 2018 Rankings after Week 9

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: Week 9, 29 OCT 2018
(Delta Calc'd from Week 8, 22 OCT 2018)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Notes:
  • At first glance, it might seem strange that Notre Dame not just got passed by LSU to drop to #3, but ND lost a little over a point despite beating #115 Navy. The thing to remember is that my ratings are iterative... meaning that it factors in learning from opponents that a team has played earlier in the season. As an example for ND here, their 2nd best win just lost their third game of the season (and lost almost 11 points). This negatively affects ND because as we learn more about the teams ND has defeated (in this specific case, Stanford), they now receive less of a rating gain from that victory over Stanford because Stanford is not rated as high as they were last week. This, along with ND's other opponents' losses, outweighed the marginal rating boost they got from defeated #115 Navy.
  • A more clear example of this can be seen by looking at the teams with Bye weeks. For example, Ohio State gained a little over a point due to the additional (net positive) learning from its opponent from last week to this week. Conversely, michigan lost almost 2 points on a Bye week due to the additional (net negative) learning from its opponents.
  • Washington State is ranked #10 in my ratings and the AP poll, and #11 in the Coaches poll.
  • Kentucky is #6? What in the world in college football is going on? Kentucky is ranked #11 and #12 in the AP and coaches poll, respectively. My ratings are giving them more credit than the human polls (possibly because of stigma?). The Wildcats have the 6th best Strength of Record and 26th toughest schedule, according to my ratings.
  • The human polls are giving UCF more credit than my ratings. I have them at #24, while both the AP and Coaches polls have them at #9. Perhaps the human polls are over correcting last year's mistake of having them rating too low (recall that in last year's rankings, I had them in my Top 5 for most of the season, while the human polls had them ranked outside the top 10, or worse. Then, they defeated Auburn in a bowl game. Auburn, by the way, was the only team to beat Alabama last year).
  • SEC dominance. The SEC holds 5 of the top 10 spots... It looks like the SEC is actually earning their hype this year... So far, anyway...
  • Top 10 // Top 25  Teams for each conference:
    • ACC: 1 // 3

NCAAF 2018 Rankings after Week 8

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: Week 8, 22 OCT 2018
(Delta Calc'd from Week 7, 15 OCT 2018)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Notes:
  • Ohio State drops to #17 after losing to  #38 Purdue.
  • Clemson edges out ND for the #1 spot, but the margin is very small: only 0.17 points.
  • LSU, Alabama, and michigan round out the top 5.
  • Kentucky is #7? What in the world in college football is going on? Kentucky is ranked #12 and #14 in the AP and coaches poll, respectively. My ratings are giving them more credit than the human polls (possibly because of stigma?). The Wildcats have the 7th best Strength of Record and 27th toughest schedule, according to my ratings.

NCAAF 2017 Final Rankings

NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings
Updated: FINAL, 26 NOV 2017
(Delta Calc'd from Week 14, 26 NOV 2017)
Some of these rankings my surprise you, but keep in mind that there is no bias towards any team or preconceived notions, and the only thing considered is what each team has accomplished so far.

(For those viewing from a phone, tap the rankings and rotate to enlarge)

Ratings Notes:
  • Ohio State moves up to #3 after defeating #13 USC. By the way, #13 USC was the Buckeye's 4th best opponent they've defeated all season... yet OSU was not in the playoffs.
  • Alabama finishes at #1 (moving up 7 spots from my pre-bowl ratings) after beating now-ranked #7 Clemson and #2 Georgia. Those were Alabama's best wins of the season, beating out #20 LSU...
  • Georgia finishes 2nd, 0.50 points above Ohio State.
  • And UCF... finishes at #4 after knocking off Auburn (the same Auburn that beat Alabama and Georgia).
  • Wisconsin finishes at #5 after defeating Miami, and Oklahoma finishes at 6.
  • Top 10 // Top 25  Teams for each conference:
    • ACC: 1 // 3
    • Big Ten: 3 // 7
    • Big 12: 1 // 4
    • Pac 12: 0 // 3
    • SEC: 3 // 6
Poll Comparison

  • A lot of agreement between my final rankings and the human polls. The biggest difference really is that the human polls froze the top 4, while my ratings made no distinction and evaluated the teams based on one last data point.

Conference Comparison

  • With a huge statement in the bowl games, the Big Ten jumped over the ACC (and so did SEC) and takes the #1 conference spot... despite being left out of the final four...
